i have been doing this slam thing for the last four years. in that time, i have witnessed, been involved in and heard some things, that have me wonder about the slam community. yet, i refuse to denounce the art or its people.

Maybe its because im still 'new' to the game but for the life of me, i cant understand why......so many poets that have built their reputations by slamming, are so quick to turn their backs on it. im not going to name drop, even though there are many names to be dropped....

so, slam was good enough to propel your career forward but NOW, that you have a some fame, slam is a dirty word? i had a discussion with someone, who broke their neck to get on a slam team, made the team, then dropped off the team at the last minute. now, this person is anti-slam. doesnt believe poetry should be judged or be a competition. but if you think about it, even at open mics....we are being judged and its a competition to draw the peoples attention to your words. so whats really the difference, the billing?

Maybe, im just tripping. Maybe once i have achieved slam greatness, i too will have a change of heart about slam. i will see it as an abomination, a bastard form of poetry no longer worthy of my support. i will slap on an anti-slam shirt, while holding up the middle finger......but will be sure to keep all of you as my friends, just in case i need contacts in your city.

First, i have to thank Matt Mason and Zedeka Poindexter for doing a great job with the GPPP. it was a poetry slam, that felt more like a poetry retreat. 30 poets invaded a small Lutheran College in Fremont, Nebraska.

Where?

Fremont, Nebraska.

Where?

Fremont, Nebraska.

Oooooh....

leaving their ego's at home but bringing great poetry.

a lot of people know of me from taking pictures but hadnt seen me perform, so this was a great chance to showcase what i can do. also, performing in front of some of the poets i have always admired and obtain feedback, was great. i held my own and would have gone further in the slam if it wasnt for the damn time penalty for the "Kiss" piece. i love doing that poem.

*Note to Ed Mabry...i really didnt bite the Kurt Cobain piece, honest.

the Klute, did a great liveblog of most of the bouts and offering comments (sorry, i dont know how to do the link thing but find him on my friends list).

things learned:

1. gotta keep the "Kiss" piece under time.
2. practice, practice, practice.
3. write, write, write...more.
4. commit more pieces to memory.
5. sushi, is GOOD.
6. Rob C, snores really loud! lol
7. practicing poems in the shower, can get you to finals.
8. Ed Mabry can tap dance
9. even the most seasoned slammer, has 'ooops' moments
10. riding with members from Denver, was awesome. Bitch better have my money!!!!

it was a great weekend for poetry. much love to everyone that attend. from the organizers, to the poets, to the volunteers...i would mention names but dont want to leave anyone out. i would suggest everyone make plans to attend next year and experience the fun personally but.....then i might not make the list and we cannot have that!!! so dont attend. it was terrible. i hated it. the town didnt even have a McDonalds!

oh yea, we had and afterparty that was even fun, until the cops showed up. do police officers in Fremont, Nebraska...REALLY need to wear black leather gloves? sheesh, you are an officer in Fremont, Nebraska.

where?

Fremont, Nebraska.

where?

Fremont, Nebraska.

Oooooooh......

pictures can be found at: http://flickr.com/photos/copaseticsoul/sets/72157607434800129/

i work retail, and everyone knows that the weekend is the busy time. those of us in retail, dread the wildness of the weekend. plans of escaping these three days, are hatched, sometimes three days to three hours before a persons schedualed work time.

i was actually looking forward to working this weekend. it would have meant i was closer to Thursday, my off day. my travel day to Omaha, for the great Midwest Pile-Up (check the name, its 6am and im using my phone to do this). im looking to the Slam.

Funny thing is, Thursday night, i get a severe headache and my stomach rejects, what it earlier enjoyed. i think nothing of it, pop a couple of tylenol and sleep. im at work, the pain returns....a co-worker (who was a nurse in a previous life) says take him to the hospital. Emergency room.

im crying (i can admit that) but still not worried about the headache or the severity of the pain; i work retail, have a 15 year old daughter and hangout with poets. a headache is nothing uncommom for me. i didnt get worried until the nurse checked my blood pressure and HER eyes became wide. when she picked up the phone and mentioned a rush, i got scared.

what finally got my attention, where the words; "bp is 230 over 150 possibility of a stroke". NOW, Im worried.two days later of blood work, vitals being checked every four hours and a liquid diet. im still alive and doing much better. the blood pressure is stabalized and the headache is gone. im able eat solid foods.

i didnt want the weekend off that bad

ps. if you know ANYONE with high blood pressure who isnt doing anything about it, tell them to drop me a line and i will be sure to educate them. i had know about my blood pressure issue but didnt think anything bad would happen.

well the Creator gave me a soft wake-up call and for that im grateful. it could have been a lot worse for me.

Thank You, to the Creator....for giving me another day!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since nationals, i have been pretty busy......working!! it so sucks.

so, i have a new tattoo and new piercing (pics coming soon). see, these are the things that happen, when your next door neighbor is a tattoo artist/piercer. this might be my last piercing but its NOT my last tattoo....i want to get my entire right arm done, my back and maybe one leg. i just have to find a way to make the tat's flow together.....

as much as i like the dude next door, there is a tattoo artist in Atlanta that gives me goose bumps! his name is Miya Bailey, and the dude is FIYAH!! how hot is the brother, well...he is booked up till 09. peep his myspace page and see why, im trying to get to the ATL for my Earth Day. LOOK AT WHAT HE DOES WITH COLOR ON DARK SKIN...its going to cost some money for him to do the work....but im sure it will be well worth it!!

im tryin to catch up with my three favorite tatted up poets....Marc Marcell, Asia and L.I.F.E., they have some serious work.

somewhere, i have to get POET or SPOKEN WORD ARTIST tatted...i just dont know where.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Got to see Ruthie Foster in concert.....she was dope. if you get a chance, go see the sister, she will blow your socks off!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We are slowly rebuilding the St.Louis Poetry Slam scene....i hope we can get it back to where it once was.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Going to Omaha in Sept, for my first big slam. there are some heavy hitters in the field but im not scared. i see it this way; "to be one of the best, you have to slam against some of the best." plus it will be fun to just hangout with the poets.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Big Ups: Taz, Andrea, Chris Imperial, Mo-Man, Karen G and the St. Louis Poetry Slam Team....for the continous love since Nationals has been over.

Can you believe i STILL have pictures to post?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Im embracing the whole 'picture poet' concept.....see, these arent just pictures to me, i try to capture the emotions of the poets when performing. that way, it will come across to someone looking at the picture. sometimes i get that perfect shot, sometimes i dont.

i so love doing it......

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i didnt want to put this in the air but........Obama, just might win the election.

i enjoyed how the Democratic Party, took the high road when dealing with McCain. they made key points on McCains weakness on various issues...making them with class. there was none of the normal B.S. just straight to the point..body blows!!

Go Obama....its time for a change.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, thats it for now.....everyone be peaceful.

Today is Thanksgiving.....and i do have a lot to be thankful for; the Creator, buffy, my kids, family, friends and life. today i will be thankful for those people that have crossed my path, each adding on to the lessons of life.

While im giving thanks, there is also a need to apologize to someone i care about.

This past summer, i violated a trust that had been four years in the making. while my intentions where NOT to cause anyone pain or suffering, it has. hate that it has caused a rift in a very tight community....but what i hate MOST, is the loss of friendships and family for HER. my actions robbed her of something that was very close to her heart, friends she loved dearly and cared very much about. this was her escape, her piece of mind....and there isnt a day that goes by where i dont regret my actions. Yet through it all, she has remained strong....but i can feel her loss.

i apologize for betraying YOUR trust in ME. I apologize for taking AWAY that which you held dear. YOU know my intent wasnt to cause pain and i hate that it went as far as it did. if there was a way to turn back the hands of time, believe me, i would. i want you to be happy again....for you to enjoy that which you once did....spend time with those that were close to your heart.

To the others involved, i apologize to you as well....i dont care WHAT you have heard, there was NO malice in my actions. i asked a question of friend, not thinking that it would become a major issue. i had then...and still have NOW, nothing but love for ALL of YOU. there is NO way, i would EVER intentionally hurt a community that has shown me nothing but love.

This issue weighs heavy on my heart everyday. i am always open to discuss this issue in order to clear the air. it is my hope that time heals the wounds and friendships can be renewed.

onelove,

Copa

I got to see Common Wed night....and it was something that i really needed. getting to see my chi-town brother was great. the crown was light because most people were headed to Jena,La but still had energy. i stood alone on the floor of the venue and felt weird. i missed the people i normally stand with. i missed seeing the faces of those i know. yet i still had fun.

that night, REAL hip-hop pushed its way into my ears, traveled dark hallways that led to closed doors where, do not enter, flashed in neon red, black and green letters. Pause. Hip-Hop, in a b-boy stance with mic in hand, serenaded me....brought back Run DMC, Public Enemy, Eric B, BDP, the Cold Crush Brothers, MC Lyte, Grandmaster Flash and Bambaataa....how i reminisced about them, my God....once again i was doing the Running the Man, the WHOP, the Gigolo and break dancing...checkout my style....once again, the MC was the messenger, the DJ provided beat.....the message simple: lets have a good time and party ya'll.....yes, yes ya'll

and we did.

for one night, we partied without the divisions of color, economic background, sex, or religion. we were unified through the music.

WE THE PEOPLE....declared our love for hip-hop.....WHILE IN A B-BOY STANCE.

FRESH FOR 07.....YOU SUCKAAAAAAAAA'S

Thanx Common.

PEACE to the JENA 6!!!

African-American Woman Tortured for A Week

By SHAYA TAYEFE MOHAJER, Associated Press Writer
Wed Sep 12, 7:52 PM ET

BIG CREEK, W.Va. - Authorities decided Wednesday not to pursue hate crime charges in the kidnapping and weeklong torture of a black woman, instead going after the suspects, who are white, on state charges that carry stiffer penalties.

While federal civil rights or state hate crime charges remain an option, a state kidnapping count that carries a sentence of up to life in prison will provide the best chance for successful prosecution, officials said.

"As a practical matter, sentenced to life, what else can be done?" U.S. Attorney Charles T. Miller told The Associated Press.

Six people face charges, including kidnapping, sexual assault and lying to police in the torture of Megan Williams, 20, at a remote hillside home in Big Creek.

State hate crime charges, which carry a sentence of 10 years, could come later, prosecutor Brian Abraham said. State sexual assault charges carry a penalty up to 35 years in prison.

The woman's captors forced her to eat rat droppings, choked her with a cable cord and stabbed her in the leg while calling her a racial slur, according to criminal complaints. They also poured hot water over her, made her drink from a toilet, and beat and sexually assaulted her during a span of about a week, the documents say.

Williams was not a random target, prosecutor Brian Abraham said Wednesday. She had a "social relationship" with one of the suspects, he said.

The Associated Press generally does not identify suspected victims of sexual assault, but Williams and her mother, Carmen Williams, agreed to release her name. Carmen Williams said she wanted people to know what her daughter had endured.

At one point, a suspect cut the woman's ankle with a knife and used the N-word in telling her she was victimized because she is black, according to the complaints.

It wasn't until an anonymous tip led Logan County sheriff's deputies to the property on Saturday that her ordeal ended, authorities said. She limped toward the deputies, her arms outstretched as she cried, "Help me," officials said.

Williams remained hospitalized Wednesday in Charleston. The hospital declined to release any information about her condition.

The victim had a previous relationship with Bobby Brewster, one of the six in custody, Abraham said. He was charged in July with domestic battery and assault after a domestic dispute involving the same woman.

"She obviously had some sort of social relationship," Abraham said. "That is based on the fact that she was present at his residence on a prior date."

The suspects have arrest records going back several years, according to records from Logan County Magistrate Court, and Abraham said was he familiar with all of them.

"Most of the charges are minor things," Abraham said. "Basically on weekends they get in trouble and by the middle of the week they make up with each other."

Since 1991, police have filed 108 criminal charges against the six.

Brewster's mother, Frankie Brewster, 49, faced the most serious charges among them. She was charged in 1994 with first-degree murder but pleaded guilty to manslaughter and wanton endangerment. She was released from prison in 2000 after serving five years in the death of an 84-year-old woman, court records show.

In Williams' case, Frankie Brewster is charged with kidnapping, sexual assault, malicious wounding and giving false information during a felony investigation.

Bobby Brewster, 24, also of Big Creek, is charged with kidnapping, sexual assault, malicious wounding and assault during the commission of a felony.

In March, Brewster was accused in criminal complaints of attacking his mother with a machete at her home, according to court records. The outcome of those charges — domestic assault, brandishing a deadly weapon and obstructing an officer — was not immediately clear.

Danny J. Combs, 20, of Harts, is charged with sexual assault and malicious wounding. Karen Burton, 46, of Chapmanville, was charged with malicious wounding, battery and assault during the commission of a felony.

Burton's daughter, Alisha Burton, 23, and George A. Messer, 27, both of Chapmanville, are charged with assault during the commission of a felony and battery. She previously faced charges of assault during the commission of a felony and battery; in May, she was accused of striking Messer with a shovel and smashing the window of a woman's car. The charges are pending.

All six remained in custody Wednesday in lieu of $100,000 cash bail each. Bobby Brewster is scheduled to appear before a Logan County Circuit Court judge on Monday to be arraigned on the kidnapping charge, according to court records. A date for his mother's appearance on the kidnapping charge has not yet been set.

Public defender Dwyane Adkins, appointed to represent Bobby Brewster, and public defender Betty Gregory, appointed to represent Karen Burton, declined to comment. The other defendants' court-appointed lawyers were either in hearings or did not immediately return telephone calls Wednesday.

Neighbors of Megan Williams in Charleston recalled her as sweet-natured but said her family members kept largely to themselves.

"They were isolated, in a way," said the Rev. Norman Jones of the Greater Emmanuel Gospel Tabernacle, which Carmen Williams attended. "Carmen was very protective of Megan, so it was hard to know her well."

after months of broken dreams, i finally made it down to Arkansas to chill with Mo-Man and Krysis. they are the twin monsters that run Poets In the Streets in Little Rock. they are trying to bring the 'word' to this community through a monthly slam and various other events.

Mo-Man and Krysis, showed a brother nothing but love...the moment i walked through the front door till the time i left. not only were those two there, my homie from Florida Cuban was in the house to feature at the slam that night....Southern Fried in
the house!! i also met a cool as poet from Denver named Ron C, the dude is good! on top of ALL of that, My aunt, who lives in the rock, came out to support...YES!

ok, before the slam, we try to drum up an audience by passing out flyers and talking with the people. we get to the venue, doors are locked. after a small panick, we learn the venue owner has gone to get refreshments...kewl. running behind, open mic start, cool....slam begins, im going fourth. i do 'pleas of piece'....did ok, flubbed up the middle...second round, x is the unknown variable (only second time reading it, first in slam), stumbled with it....bad Copa!!

didnt make the third round but was kewl with that.....the others poets brought some heat. Rob C, dope. TJ, fiyah. lovely lady with slam experience, awesome. Houston, ok, Blind Guy, aight....blind guy beats me for fifth spot. yes, i said blind guy. his pieces are on a laptop that he listens to while performing.....im kewl with that, let your passion flow brother.....now, remember i mentioned being kewl about NOT making the last round, the money round, the sho'em what ya got round? well, it turns out the 'blind guy' used someone else's piece in one of the previous rounds......what the fuck? this wasnt proven until after the slam but still...wtf!?

i wanted to get mad BUT....how would it look me getting upset with a 'blind guy'? that would REALLY make me look cool, right? im not mad for the simple fact if: 1. i had performed my pieces better. 2. had selected more audience friendly pieces, i would have been in the fifth round.

I think Mo-Man was more upset than i was,lol....i loved that dude. me, im take this as a learning experience. im going to use it to be more creative with my writing. i needed to write more, this gives me another reason to do so.

what i WAS upset about.....the train, which was suppose to leave at 11:34, was two hours late....uuuuugh. we left at 2am, i didnt get to St.Louis until 10:30 am....that gets another, uuuuuugh! i did enjoy sleeping ALL the way back....lol.

so thank you Mo-Man, Krysis, Cuban, Rob , Chee Chee and all the other poets who came to Mo Man's for the afterparty (too much drinking and poetry tag). thanks for a great time and a lesson learned.

did i mention Mo Man took Rob C and i out on the town? he took us to THE Central High School...wow. also took us to the Old Mill were they filmed part of Gone With The Wind...cool. if you get a chance, ya need to stop through, every second saturday of the month for their slam and to get some love.

Yes, its gonna be funny to go for free!

I guess that the feeling hasnt reached that 'HAPPY SPOT' in my body yet. it could be attending Nationals for the last three years, being close to different teams and watching them go through the motions has numbed me a little to the experience. there is a young guy on the team, Bobby, who is excited about attending Nationals..I mean really really excited and im sure his excitment will rub off on me....i will say that
its gonna be funny to wear the POET badge instead of the VOLUNTEER badge.

Thanx to: Buffy, Delrica, Chris Imperial, Scott Woods, Big Poppa E and team Austin-Neo Soul....for giving words of encouragement and wisdom.

See ya in Austin.

onelove
